Sadly yesterday the local temperatures in the South West of Wester Australia exceeded 31degrees Celsius - this has been established as the tipping point temperature for urban living Critically Endangered Western Ringtail possums to start presenting with burnt paws from crossing man made surfaces while relocating to cooler spots during the peak heat of the day. We love renewable solar energy- but the uptake of this technology has provided a lovely new urban home for possums. Until it get too hot …🔥then they must traverse searing hot roofs to safety- burning their paws 🐾 rendering them unable to climb to eat or escape predators. This beautiful female possum was found bailed up in a back garden by dogs - but her main injury is severe pad burns. It can take up to 3 months in care to heal. Huge gratitude to @busseltonvet for their emergency care and compassion.

@busseltonmargaretriverairport Crew had a very noisy landing today with “ Darryl” literally flying into the terminal. Probably displaced by the strong wings this fledgling was very trusting and climbed straight up James’s arm. The Airport Crew monitor onsite wildlife closely and have never had a visit from a noisy young Galah before. “ Darryl” will join our little flock of fledglings @fawna_flight_academy so he will be in good company 💚🌻

A Big Shout out to all our regular “Containers for Change” contributors! All these weekly amounts add up and helps provide much needed funding for our wildlife welfare activities across the South West. This week’s contribution from the very sustainability minded team @willsdomain netted another $30. Consider getting your “Hospo” Team on board to separate recyclable containers for the wildlife- we can even swing by and puck them up for you in our trusty trailer funded by @busseltonwater !

Remember the Great “Southern “ Petrel that was snagged on a fishing rig @busseltonjettyinc - it was freed but flew away- only to turn up the next day in @dunsborough - approaching a the team from @naturalistetreecare who were volunteering at Toby’s Inlet. The Petrel was hungry and could no longer fly due to a lesion under a wing where where the fishing jig had been. Veterinary care was provided by @busseltonvet and rest and recuperation was provided by some very brave @fawna.inc volunteers @fawna_flight_academy . When fully recovered and strong it was transported offshore by the marine crew @waparkswildlife . It truly takes a whole community to assist wildlife in need- what a privilege to be able to assist such a magnificent bird. The Petrel was banded in Antarctica as a juvenile by the team @polaroceans Polar oceans research group - and we were sent this certificate by @usgs and the @canadianwildlifeservice. We hosted Bethany Jackson and Sarah Thorpe from Murdoch University today - the ladies offered their expertise in assisting FAWNA to prepare FAWNA Flight Academy for the predicted arrival of Avian Flu. Migratory birds may bring this deadly virus to our shores - not only are our water birds at risk but it is possible the virus could spread to mammals and even humans. The Northern Hemisphere has witnessed devastating losses in water bird species. #these ladies will be back in early December to present a Community education event. We will need to be vigilant and work together to prevent a wildlife catastrophe.
